Outdoor Lab

Outdoor Education Lab School (OELS)
All sixth grade students participate in Jefferson County’s Outdoor Lab School. This can be one of the highlights of their educational experience. OELS is part of the regular sixth grade curriculum that cannot be duplicated in the classroom setting. Students study conservation; water, soil/forest resources; relationships between plant and animal communities; and life cycles. Mapping skills, creative writing, astronomy, art, music, and leisure activities will also be a part of the week’s activities. The experience in the OELS environment provides opportunities for developing responsibility, character, and healthy living habits. It promotes an understanding and respect for the environment. This week is a regular week of school attendance and students’ participation at Outdoor Lab School contributes to their grades.
